With regard to business referrals, the Law Society of Upper Canada has approved the payment of referral fees when a matter is referred to another lawyer because of expertise and ability, provided that:

1. the fee is reasonable and does not increase the total amount of the fee charged to the client; and

2. the client is informed and consents
